Deciding on paddle length can be very confusing the more you dissect it. There are many suggestions and so many rules of thumbs, you'd need several sets of hands fit them all. The main thing to remember is nothing trumps comfort when it comes to paddle length. If your comfort level does not fit a "rule of thumb", forget the rule.
If you do not know the length of your comfort zone, this has proven to be the best way of finding the ideal length for me. First, hold a broomstick (or paddle) over your head with your elbows at 90 degree angles (standing in front of a mirror helps confirm this). Next, measure the distance from the outside of your left hand to the outside of your right hand. This number will give you the length of the shaft that will suit you best. You can then add the length of the paddle blade. This will give you the total length of the paddle that should fit your paddling needs.
A general rule that can also be used, especially for straight shaft paddles is that, while standing, the paddle should tall enough to fall between your chin and nose.
With Holz Canoe Paddles, you can choose from a number of length options. It is important to keep in mind, bent shaft paddles are often quite a bit shorter than straight shaft paddles. Also, the longer the paddle, the heavier it will be and more difficult to portage. If one of our length options doesn't fit you needs, feel free to email us the length needed and we will make one to fit you.
