Holz Canoe Paddles Decorative and Functional Wood Canoe Paddles

All Holz Canoe Functional Paddles are entirely triple coated in marine grade, UV resistant polyurethane. Each paddle blade is protected with fiberglass and epoxy resin for strength with the blade tips double epoxy/fiberglass protected. Over time, use, storage, transportation, water, and sunlight can break down the polyurethane coatings. A deteriorated coating can lead to yellowing of the strong, but UV vulnerable epoxy blade. Also, heavy use in rocky/sandy areas can gradually deteriorate the blade tip protection. However, proper paddle care and maintenance can prevent this and mean the difference between a tool that remains beautiful and functional on the water and something completely different.

As expected, preventing damage is the best way to ensure your paddle serves you well for many years. The double fiberglass and resin reinforced blade is designed to hold up in difficult conditions. The additional hardwood blade tip also increases the blade tip durability and protects the softer Red Cedar of the blade. However, rocks and sand can damage any paddle blade over years of use. You should always try to avoid using the paddle to push the canoe or pry it against rocks and sand. This is a job for a push pole and not a Holz Canoe Paddle.

Even with great care in avoiding damage, it is often impossible to avoid all situations. Refinishing your paddle every few years, depending on use, is recommended for long paddle life. As stated above, the epoxy resin is very strong, but does not hold up well to UV rays and once the protected polyurethane wears down, the resin becomes vulnerable to sunlight. Refinishing your paddle is a great step to increase the life and function of your Holz Canoe Paddle. Refinishing is also not a difficult job. Just follow the steps below.

Paddle Refinishing

Safety - Make sure you use proper safety procedures for refinishing. Follow all product instructions and use proper safety equipment like high quality respirators, goggles, and protective clothing.

Tools and Supplies Needed

Goggles
Respirator/Mask
Gloves
Protective Clothing
100 Grit Sandpaper
220 Grit Sandpaper
1 Quart Marine Grade, UV Resistant Polyurethane
High Quality Sponge Brushes

1. Hand sand the entire paddle (blade, shaft, and handle) with a fine grit sandpaper (100 grit works well).

2. Wipe down the entire paddle with a damp cloth/rag to remove any dust.

3. Using a marine grade, UV resistant Spar polyurethane, paint a thin coat of polyurethane over the entire paddle (you may find it easier to do one half or one side of the paddle at a time to make drying easier and cleaner). A good quality sponge brush works well. Follow all the appropriate safety and application instructions of the product you are using.

4. Once dry, lightly sand the paddle with an extra fine grit sandpaper (220 grit works well).

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining coats. The polyurethane product should have a recommended number of coats (typically 3 is good).

6. Enjoy your Holz Canoe Paddle for many more years!
